"Mud Cloth" - handwoven throw

Bogolan or Bogolanfini is the traditional African mud cloth from Mali that is made by hand. Men and women work together to spin the fabric by hand and weave it on small looms using local cotton. The dried fabric is then soaked in a mixture of crushed leaves from local trees and is ready for use in mud dyes and embellishments. Traditionally, women decorated the fabric by drawing designs on the dried fabric with a small spatula. Patterns and colors can have a lot to do with gender, social status or personal taste. The manufacturing process is lengthy, but the results are stunning works of art that reflect African culture.
